Racial abilities in Forever: every race compared

Every general racial ability, both Skyborne variants, additional Priest spells and practical advice for PvE, PvP and starting fresh. Checked launch state for 7 November 2026.

Choosing your race in Forever

LAUNCH STATE · 7 NOVEMBER 2026

Your race changes the tools available when a fight turns. This guide covers all eight original races and both Skyborne variants: active abilities, passive bonuses and practical uses.

Values follow Blizzard’s final pre-launch developer notes, 5–6 November hotfixes and reviewed Forever game-file tooltips. Old Classic lists and early beta summaries can lead you astray. The database mostly shows build 1.60.1.70862; conflicting or unresolved fields are identified beside the relevant effect.

How to read this: activate an “active” ability yourself; “passive” effects work under their stated conditions. Active descriptions include duration and cooldown. “Putting the kit to work” and the final recommendations are our editorial guidance. Some German names for new abilities are fan translations; English original names remain available for exact identification.

RACE & CLASS / PVP & PVE

How can you use your race’s strengths with your class? Choose your class and explore PvP and PvE applications for every available combination ↗

Making a practical choice

Start with faction and available class, then your playstyle. A pet-only bonus does nothing for a build with no active pet. A defensive button matters only when it actually removes the effect stopping you.

  1. Playing together: do your faction and ruleset match your group?
  2. Role: are damage, resources, survival or control more useful to you?
  3. Situation: bosses, small groups, battlegrounds or questing?
  4. Execution: will you use another active button consistently and deliberately?

Our recommendation is to choose advantages that fit the way you actually play. Extra hit chance or a strong cooldown alone cannot establish an overall ranking. Class, equipment, opponents and encounter duration all change the comparison.

Human

ALLIANCE

Will to Survive

Active · 3 min cooldown. Immediately removes stuns. Its removal is limited to that control category.

Perception

Active · 3 min cooldown. Greatly improves stealth detection for 20 sec.

Ruthless

Passive. Adds 1% critical strike chance to attacks and spells, without a weapon-type requirement.

The Human Spirit

Passive. Increases Spirit by 10%. This modifies the stat, rather than directly granting 10% more total mana regeneration.

Putting the kit to work

Will to Survive answers stuns; Perception helps reveal a hidden opponent before their opener. Keep both within reach. Spirit depends on your class and regeneration model. Do not turn it into a blanket damage or healing increase.

Dwarf

ALLIANCE

Stoneform

Active · 3 min cooldown. Removes Bleeds, Poisons and Diseases. Grants 8 sec immunity to those effects and 10% Physical damage reduction. The defensive bonus is damage reduction, rather than armor.

Find Treasure

Active · until cancelled. Tracks nearby treasure on the minimap and can provide extra treasure. The checked data does not specify a fixed extra-loot chance.

Artisan’s Precision

Passive. Increases hit chance with spells and attacks by 1%. This effect is not restricted to maces or guns.

Big Game Hunter

Passive. Deals 5% more damage to Beasts. The target’s creature type determines whether it applies.

Putting the kit to work

Plan Stoneform for an applicable bleed, disease, poison or Physical damage window. Artisan’s Precision matters when planning gear: extra hit has different value depending on attack or spell type and the relevant cap. Include Big Game Hunter when evaluating Beasts, rather than every encounter.

Night Elf

ALLIANCE

Elune’s Light

Active · 3 min cooldown. Increases critical strike chance with spells and attacks by 10% for 15 sec.

Shadowmeld

Active. Conceals you until you move or cancel. Out of combat: 10 sec cooldown. Combat use discourages attacks against you and changes the cooldown to 2 min. This does not establish a guaranteed full combat reset.

Quickness

Passive. Adds 1% Dodge and 2% movement speed. Night Elf Rogues and Druids are harder to detect in Stealth, as if one level higher.

Wisp Spirit

Passive. On death you become a wisp with 75% greater ghost movement speed.

Putting the kit to work

Align Elune’s Light with a window in which you can actually attack or heal. Shadowmeld requires remaining still, so plan your position and target changes. Wisp travel helps after death rather than during a fight. Also check the current Druid hotfix below.

Current game-file tooltips: Night Elf

Gnome

ALLIANCE

Escape Artist

Active · 2 min cooldown. Instantly removes movement impairments and grants 3 sec immunity to them. It is not a general stun or fear break.

Eureka!

Active · 2 min cooldown · 8 sec. Reduces eligible resource costs by 10% and increases eligible ability damage by 10%; Priests also gain healing. Periodic effects are excluded; channels are not considered periodic here. Power Word: Shield benefits. There is no three-use limit.

Expansive Mind

Passive. Increases maximum resources by 5%: Rage for Warriors, Energy for Rogues, Mana for Priests, Mages and Warlocks.

Engineering Specialization

Passive. Reduces Engineering device failure/backfire rate by 20%. This is a relative reduction in failure rate, not a guarantee or a flat 20 percentage-point subtraction.

Putting the kit to work

Use Escape Artist against roots and slows; a stun needs another answer. Plan a short sequence of eligible abilities for Eureka. A larger resource pool can aid planning, but does not generate resources on its own. Engineering devices can still fail despite the specialization.

Orc

HORDE

Blood Fury

Active · 2 min cooldown. Increases Attack Power and Spell Power by 10% for 15 sec.

Shatter Curse

Active · 3 min cooldown. Removes all Curses and Banes. Reduces magical damage taken by 5% for 8 sec. It grants no curse immunity.

Command

Passive. Increases Hunter and Warlock pet damage by 5%. Note the current correction to some Warlock pet ability interactions.

Hardiness

Passive. Reduces stun duration on you by 20%. This shortens stuns rather than providing a random chance to resist them.

Putting the kit to work

Use Blood Fury during a productive attack window. Command supports Hunter and Warlock pets and matters when the pet actually contributes. Hardiness shortens stuns predictably. Shatter Curse removes existing curses; it does not prevent new ones from being applied.

Tauren

HORDE

War Stomp

Active · 90 sec cooldown · 0.5 sec cast. Stuns nearby enemies within 8 yards for 2 sec. The checked export leaves the target cap unresolved, so no fixed count is asserted.

Cultivation

Active · 15 min cooldown. Duplicates a nearby herb for harvesting, even without Herbalism. Each herb can be cultivated once. Required character level follows the herb’s Herbalism requirement divided by 5; herbs requiring more than 300 become available at level 60.

Endurance

Passive. Increases total health by 5%. The current trait does not include a hit bonus.

Plainsrunning

Passive. While moving, gains 2% movement speed every 5 sec, up to 60%. Standing still or taking damage reduces the effect. It does not increase mounted speed. Battleground restrictions are listed below.

Putting the kit to work

War Stomp needs a short cast and nearby enemies. Use the opening to reposition or follow with a spell when enemies can be stunned. Plainsrunning helps with longer running routes. Stopping and damage disrupt its build-up, and battleground flag rules further limit its use.

Troll

HORDE

Berserking

Active · 3 min cooldown. Grants 10% attack and casting speed for 15 sec. Duration follows Blizzard’s final developer notes; some database tooltips leave it unresolved.

Rapid Regeneration

Active · 3 min cooldown. Restores 50% of maximum health over 6 sec. Movement, actions or incoming damage interrupt it.

Regeneration

Passive. Increases health regeneration by 20%. Allows 20% of total health regeneration to continue during combat.

Beast Slaying

Passive. Increases damage to Beasts by 5%. It does not automatically apply to players or other creature types.

Putting the kit to work

Use Berserking when forced movement and control effects are unlikely to waste its window. Rapid Regeneration needs several protected seconds, making a retreat or a break between fights a useful opportunity. Beast Slaying is creature-type dependent. Speed is not a matching flat damage multiplier.

Forsaken / Undead

HORDE

Will of the Forsaken

Active · 2 min cooldown. Instantly removes Charm, Fear and Sleep. It is unavailable during Scatter Shot. The current tooltip grants no subsequent immunity window.

Cannibalize

Active · 2 min cooldown. Requires a Humanoid or Undead corpse within 5 yards. Restores 7% of total health and mana every 2 sec for 10 sec. Movement, actions or damage interrupt it.

Touch of the Grave

Passive. Attacks and spells with a damage component can drain up to 5% of your maximum health from the target. Proc chance: 20% for Warriors, Paladins and Rogues; 30% for Priests, Mages and Warlocks. Internal cooldown: 15 sec. Periodic damage ticks do not themselves trigger it.

Underwater Breathing

Passive. Breath lasts 300% longer underwater. This is not unlimited underwater breathing.

Putting the kit to work

Save Will of the Forsaken for a decisive control effect. Cannibalize requires a suitable corpse and an uninterrupted pause. Touch of the Grave is an occasional supplement rather than reliable on-demand healing. Do not confuse it with Touch of Weakness, the additional Priest spell.

Skyborne: High Order & Windshaper

HIGH ORDER: ALLIANCE · WINDSHAPER: HORDE

Wind Blessed

Passive · both variants. Adds 2% spellcasting, melee and ranged haste.

Elemental Insight

Passive · both variants. Deals 5% more damage to Elementals.

Walk on Air

Active · both variants · 90 sec cooldown. Allows controlled downward gliding for 10 sec; activates instantly.

Read Leyline

Active · High Order only · 2 min cooldown · 0.5 sec cast. Increases health and mana regeneration by 50% for 15 sec, or 100% while Attuned. Castable while moving. Unavailable during Innervate, which replaces the weaker effect.

Skysight

Active · Windshaper only · 2 min cooldown · 0.5 sec cast. The latest Blizzard notes specify 15% movement speed for 15 sec, or 30% while Charged. Castable while moving. Some older database views say 30 sec; this guide explicitly follows the official 15 sec figure.

Putting the kit to work

Both variants share the first three traits. High Order receive Read Leyline; Windshaper receive Skysight. Prepare location modifiers for appropriate routes without treating them as permanent combat buffs. Gliding helps with controlled descents. Also check class access: High Order have Mages, Windshaper have Shamans; neither variant has Priests.

Research note

Current game-file tooltips: Skyborne: High Order & Windshaper

Attuned and Charged: Read Leyline at a leyline grants Attuned; Skysight at an elemental convergence grants Charged. Both last one hour, persist through death and are removed when entering a raid. They modify the short active ability; they do not give one continuous hour of doubled regeneration or 30% speed.

Priests: additional race-specific spells

All Priests gain Fear Ward and Devouring Plague at level 20. Each of the six Priest races also has two class-specific spells in addition to its general racial kit. Skyborne cannot be Priests.

Which kit fits your goals?

PvE damage

Compare persistent bonuses with short damage windows first. Humans and Dwarves have different offensive passives; Night Elves, Orcs, Trolls and Skyborne offer other active or passive tools. A hit bonus does not replace checking your equipment. A pet bonus matters only for the damage your pet actually contributes.

Healing and resources

Check which spells can critically heal, which resources your build spends and whether a regeneration ability helps during combat. Regeneration is different from an instant mana refill. Do not schedule a channel during a window in which you must reliably heal or move.

Tanking and survival

Extra health, avoidance and temporary armor answer different problems. Removing a bleed can matter more in one encounter than a small permanent bonus. Stuns help against controllable enemies; they are not a reliable defensive plan against immune bosses.

PvP and control

Learn the exact effect category: fear, stun, root, slow and disorient are different mechanics. Match your response to the enemy’s effect. Save a break when it can let you reach an objective, escape a damage window or protect an ally.

Questing, professions and travel

Less downtime, useful loot tracking and convenient travel can save substantial time over an evening. Judge travel effects on the route you actually take: stopping, damage, instance boundaries and flag rules change their value. Gathering tools also need their level requirements checked.

Current hotfixes: older tricks that no longer apply

  • Night Elves: Shadowmeld no longer gives Druids unintended access to Ravage and Pounce.
  • Orcs: excessive Command benefits on some Warlock pet abilities were corrected.
  • Tauren: Plainsrunning cannot build during battleground preparation. Carrying a battleground flag prevents stacking and removes existing stacks.

Older demonstrations of these situations do not establish how the abilities work now.

Common questions and your next step

Is one race best at everything?
This guide does not establish a universal winner. Choose for your class, role and important situations. Our practical recommendations are not simulated damage rankings.
Do German and English names refer to the same ability?
Yes. Some new names are our translations. English original names identify the corresponding ability directly beside our descriptions.
Why are a few numbers missing?
Some game-file tooltips contain placeholders or conflict with older versions. We do not fill those gaps with estimates. Dated current Blizzard changes take precedence over older database views.
What should I check before making a character?
Faction, class, ruleset and the tooltip in the current client. Then decide which active button belongs on your bars and when you intend to use it.
