Recommended picks for leveling, PvP and PvE
“Best” means the right tool for your task. These recommendations follow current family abilities, not a measured DPS ranking. An ordinary beast with suitable learned ranks is often more practical than a distant rare pet.
Leveling
Comfortable, efficient leveling
- Boar: For quick single pulls: Charge gets the pet into contact quickly and helps with the opening. Elder Mottled Boar (from 10) →
- Bear: For controlled multi-pulls: Swipe hits up to three nearby enemies. Start small and check threat on each target. Young Forest Bear (from 10) →
- Cat: For offensive play and prepared single targets: Prowl allows a concealed approach and stronger opener. Durotar Tiger (from 10) → · Frostsaber (from 56) →
- Turtle: For dangerous damage windows: Shell Shield provides temporary defense. Oasis Snapjaw (from 15) →
PvP
Control and deliberate pressure
- Spider: For distance and target control: Web roots for four seconds. Use the window to reposition or make a planned target swap. Forest Lurker (from 10) → · Venom Web Spider (from 19) →
- Crocolisk: For pressure on healed targets: Dismember reduces healing received by 25% for six seconds. Align it with your damage. Dreadmaw Crocolisk (from 10) → · Sawtooth Crocolisk (from 38) →
- Bat: Against casters: Sonic Blast increases cast times. Useful for making repeated casts harder while maintaining pressure. Vampiric Duskbat (from 10) → · Plaguebat (from 53) →
- Bird of Prey: Against suitable weapon attacks: Mine! disarms for three seconds, creating breathing room for you or the pet. Strigid Owl (from 10) →
PvE
Group utility and single targets
- Wolf: For groups with melee players: Furious Howl supports melee Attack Power within 15 yards. Position the Wolf near those who benefit. Prowler (from 10) → · Prairie Wolf Alpha (from 10) → · Silvermane Wolf (from 43) →
- Tallstrider: For physical group damage: Dust Cloud reduces target Armor. Check whether the group needs this contribution. Elder Plainstrider (from 10) → · Fleeting Plainstrider (from 12) →
- Cat: For offensive play and prepared single targets: Prowl allows a concealed approach and stronger opener. Durotar Tiger (from 10) → · Frostsaber (from 56) →
Practical starting choice: from level 10, tame a suitable ordinary beast nearby. Later, add a Spider for deliberate PvP control or a Wolf for a melee party. Switch for a particular tool rather than color or rarity alone.

What level do I need to tame?
- Complete Hunter taming unlocks from level 10; safely stable an existing pet.
- Check the actual target: a level-11 beast requires Hunter level 11 even when its record says 10–11. A level-8 beast still requires taming unlocked from Hunter level 10.
- Check the exact creature and secure the area. The checked taming tooltip specifies 20 seconds of concentration and all Armor lost during the attempt.
- After taming, check suitable food, happiness, training and learned ranks. Family membership does not mean the freshly tamed pet already knows every ability. At a high Hunter level, also weigh the actual pet level and catch-up effort against a higher-level beast; do not assume automatic level matching.
Scaling, Monkey and pet control
With Improved Aspect of the Monkey and the aspect active, the current talent text intends a defensive pet benefit. This mainly helps against dodgeable melee attacks; gear inheritance is a separate system. At full rank, tooltip arithmetic intends up to seven percentage points of pet dodge, but a current rank-effect report means this is not an independently confirmed live result.
While leveling, let the pet build threat first. In PvP, use recall and family control deliberately. In dungeons, coordinate Growl and area abilities with the tank. Howl, Dust Cloud and Web only help when they reach the right target at the right time.

Foxes and rares: what remains unresolved
Foxes are confirmed as a new Forever family. The current client describes Trickster’s Dance as twelve seconds of +50 percentage points of dodge and shorter attack intervals, making them interesting for defensive windows.
The ability guide now includes a tame report for Vuldren Alpha on Zephras Isle. The record lists beast level 10, while Trickster’s Dance requires pet level 20; its rank association is therefore flagged separately. Earlier Gray Fox and Rustleaf Fox records remain incomplete. These reports are not presented as a guaranteed ready-to-use companion recommendation. Rare Cats such as The Rake are also not guaranteed upgrades over ordinary beasts; inspect the actual pet’s attack interval and passives.
Data scope and map provenance
Recommendations and search approaches are original editorial guidance. Map pins show selected NPC reference positions, not complete surveyed spawn areas, fixed respawn times or confirmed server routes. Maps are embedded locally from Forever 70790; family abilities are cross-checked against 70862. Some German names are editorial translations.
